African Things:
Changing the Narrative of Africa, One Gift at a Time

It all began on a quiet night during my first day in secondary boarding school abroad. A classmate turned to me and asked, “Do you live in a mud house?” I was stunned. Having grown up in Nigeria—a land of vibrant culture, resilient people, and boundless potential—I had never imagined that the world viewed Africa as a place of poverty and backwardness.

That moment sparked an awareness I had never confronted before. Not only did the world carry a distorted image of Africa, but even I had unknowingly absorbed some of these misconceptions. While I held Nigeria in high regard, I realized that, to the rest of the world, Nigeria was not exempt from the stereotypes assigned to Africa as a whole.

For the rest of my time in school, I made it my mission to challenge this narrative. I brought back pictures of Nigeria after every trip home, shared stories of our innovation and strength, and showed my classmates the Nigeria I knew—one of beauty, intelligence, and pride. But their reactions were disheartening. Even as they acknowledged my experiences, they dismissed them as exceptions: “You’re just from a rich family,” they’d say, convinced that the rest of Nigeria—and Africa—remained the poverty-stricken continent they had seen on UNICEF ads.

When I returned home after university, I was inspired by the wave of creativity sweeping through Nigeria—African materials and prints being transformed into modern designs like earrings and handbags. For me, these creations were more than products; they were statements. They told a story of Africa’s innovation, resilience, and beauty.

But I knew we could do more. I wanted to scale these efforts, to create a platform that would not only make Nigerians proud of their heritage but also showcase Africa’s ingenuity to the world.

And that’s how African Things was born.

In 2013, during my NYSC year, I bought my first set of items—beautiful earrings from a local vendor—and resold them to colleagues at my posting. The demand grew, and I reinvested, buying more and expanding the product range. I wasn’t just selling accessories; I was sharing the story of Africa’s creativity and cultural richness.

My passion for scaling the business was solidified in 2015 when I was selected as a recipient of the Tony Elumelu Foundation grant, receiving $5,000 (just over one million naira at the time). With this boost, I quit my job, registered African Things as a business, and began working on it full-time.

I approached stores that exclusively sold Western items and convinced them to include African-made products. It wasn’t easy, but I succeeded in getting five stores on board. That early victory fueled my drive, and at our peak, African Things was in over 35 stores across Nigeria, including Spar, Mega Plaza, Prince Ebeano, and Blenco. We also launched on platforms like Amazon and Etsy, bringing African-made products to global markets.

Today, we are proud to have our own flagship store at Banex Mall, Oniru Lekki, a vibrant space where customers can experience the essence of African culture and craftsmanship.

Our hopes for the future are even brighter. We envision a world where African Things becomes a global brand, with stores across major cities internationally, showcasing African-inspired gifts and products. We aspire to empower more artisans, creating sustainable livelihoods and promoting ethical production.

It’s about giving Nigerian artisans a platform to showcase their talent and empowering them to compete on a global scale. Most importantly, it’s about fostering pride in being African, both at home and abroad.

Every product we create tells a story. Every sale supports an artisan. Every gift shared spreads the richness of African heritage.

This is African Things—a celebration of Africa, its people, and its limitless potential.
